If you haven't gotten your copy of Trace Adkins' latest record Cowboy's Back in Town, I absolutely insist that you do it soon! If you're a Trace fan, or even if you're not, just go get the album. Make sure it's the Deluxe Edition, and not the normal one because two of my favorite songs came off those 4 bonus tracks. One of them, Pictures On Mantles, tells of the memories that come with all the pictures on our mantles. It kinda resonances with Jamey Johnson's In Color, but is sung in a different way. the voice in Jamey's hit belonged to the grandfather, while Trace's belongs to the grandchild. It's interesting to hear the same topic in two different songs, sang from two different perspectives. But I found that this song really touches and moves me with it's beauty and poignancy, especially in the chorus.
Pictures on Mantles
Trace Adkins
Grandpa in his tux and boutonniere
Grandma in her gown and train
And though they’re gone they shine on through the years
In that old wooden picture frame
Uncle Johnny in marine attire
Standing on a foreign shore
Still wants the heart above a smouldering fire
Though he never came home from the war
Long after this life’s over
Love will shine on
In pictures on mantles
Eternal candles
Sparks that rekindle yesterday
When fires fade to embers
And our lives surrender
They will remember
The love we made
In pictures on mantles
The hands of time they never hesitate
And only love will survive
And soon whatever life that we create
Will be reduced to 3 by 5's
And when we’re nothing more than memories
Love will live on
In pictures on mantles
Eternal candles
Sparks that rekindle yesterday
When fires fade to embers
And our lives surrender
They will remember
The love we made
In pictures on mantles
And long after this life’s over
Love will shine on
In pictures on mantles
Eternal candles
Sparks that rekindle yesterday
When fires fade to embers
And our lives surrender
They will remember
The love we made
In pictures on mantles
