Don't expect a predicatable, or even recognizable, new album from Sugarland. That seems to be the message the duo gave to Billboard when discussing the upcoming disc, provisionally titled 'The Incredible Machine'. The inspiration for the new music, and the tour, came from 'steampunk', a subgenre of science fiction set in a world where steampower is still used, a choice Jennifer Nettles described "emotionally as bungee jumping and eating chocolate cake. It's terrifying and gratifying, all at the same time."
The new album will probably hold 10 or 11 tracks and looks set for a fall release. From the sound of things, everything about it will be different to previous Sugarland releases. Jennifer said:
"This time, we wanted to be lean and clean with it and make conscious choices going into it. If we felt like one wasn't working, we didn't finish it. From a writing standpoint, we've really been able to grow. And for me as a singer, you want to evolve. You paint with a lot of emotional colors and you don't want to sing the same thing or sing the same way. We didn't make it ballad heavy, though we do enjoy those moments of poignancy. The arrangements use different choices of instrumentation. I don't know if there's even a mandolin on this record."
